 Professor Cleosini: Superlativo em inglês : como usar?

 

Existem algumas particularidades para o uso do superlativo em inglês. Ele pode variar de acordo com as palavras que você  está usando. Para saber um pouco mais sobre esse assunto, confira nosso post sobre os adjetivos mais usados em inglês.

Como usar o superlativo

Adjetivos com uma ou duas sílabas

As palavras curtas são as mais fáceis de aprender. Por exemplo, quando temos um adjetivo que tem uma ou duas sílabas, tudo que você deve fazer é colocar o the e adicionar – est no final. Dá uma olhada nos exemplos para compreender melhor:

 Cheap – the cheapest* – o mais barato

 Cold – the coldest* – o mais frio

 Fast – the fastest_ – o mais rápido

 Nice – the nicest – o mais legal

 Old – the oldest – o mais velho

 Young – the youngest – o mais jovem

 Small – the smallest – o menor

 Tall – the tallest – o mais alto

 Strong – the strongest – o mais forte

 Weak – the weakest – o mais fraco

Mas preste atenção! Se os adjetivos que você estiver usando forem como esses abaixo, temos que dobrar a última letra antes de acrescentar o  – est . Veja como você deve fazer:

 Big – the biggest – o maior

 Thin – the thinnest – o mais fino

 Fat – the fattest – o mais gordo

 Hot – the hottest – o mais quente

 Sad – the saddest – o mais triste

Fique atento também caso a palavra utilizada termine em –y. Nesse caso, devemos retirar o –y e acrescentar – iest . Veja só como fazer:

 Angry – the angriest – o mais bravo

 Busy – the busiest – o mais ocupado

 Crazy – the craziest – o mais maluco

 Funny – the funniest – o mais engraçado

 Happy – the happiest – o mais feliz

 Tidy – the tidiest – o mais organizado

Para palavras maiores, que possuem mais de duas sílabas, a regrinha muda: deve-se acrescentar the most antes do adjetivo, sem alterá-lo. Veja alguns exemplos dessa utilização abaixo:

 Beautiful – the most beautiful – o mais bonito

 Expensive – the most expensive – o mais caro

 Different – the most different – o mais diferente

 Interesting – the most interesting – o mais interessante

 Important – the most important – o mais importante

 Popular – the most popular – o mais popular

Exceções

Como para toda regra há uma exceção, o superlativo em inglês não ficariam de fora. E os adjetivos que fogem à regra são uns dos mais usados em uma conversa em inglês. Eles não se submetem às regras que já explicamos acima. Veja só como eles são utilizados:

 Good – the best – o melhor

 Bad – the worst – o pior

 Far – the farthest – o mais longe

Oh! This is the fattest dog I’ve ever seen. – Nossa! Este é o cachorro mais gordo que eu já vi.

I’ve heard on the News that today is the hottest day of the year. – Eu escutei no noticiário que hoje é o dia mais quente do ano.

I laughed so hard with Tim yesterday. He is the funniest ! – Eu ri muito com o Tim ontem. Ele é o mais engraçado!

She is the prettiest baby in the world. – Ela é a bebê mais linda do mundo.

That was the most interesting book I’ve read in a while. – Esse é o livro mais interessante que eu já li ultimamente.

That’s the most interesting museum I’ve ever been to. – Esse é o museu mais interessante que eu já estive.

I’m so happy! Today is the best day of my life. – Eu estou muito feliz! Hoje é o melhor dia da minha vida.

Paris is the farthest place I’ve ever visited. – Paris é o lugar mais longe que já visitei
